The Himachal Pradesh government has taken a significant step toward supporting vulnerable sections of society by allocating ₹53.21 crore annually to the ‘Mukhya Mantri Sukh Shiksha Yojana.’ This initiative is aimed at providing financial assistance to widows, destitute women, divorced women, and disabled parents to ensure the education and well-being of their children.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced the allocation, emphasizing the government’s commitment to fostering a supportive environment for families facing adversity. “The state will allocate ₹53.21 crore annually to fund this initiative,” he stated, highlighting the importance of addressing the needs of those who are often overlooked in society.
The scheme targets two specific age groups. For children under 18 years, eligible women and disabled parents will receive a monthly grant of ₹1,000. This financial aid is intended to cover essential expenses related to education, health, and nutrition, ensuring that children from vulnerable families do not miss out on crucial developmental opportunities.
In addition to supporting younger children, the scheme also extends its benefits to those who pursue higher education. Children who secure admission to undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, or vocational courses will receive financial assistance from the government to cover their tuition and hostel costs. This aspect of the scheme is designed to remove financial barriers that often prevent students from continuing their education beyond high school.
Chief Minister Sukhu acknowledged the significant challenges faced by widowed, deserted, or abandoned women in supporting their children. “These women are particularly vulnerable, lacking the moral and financial support needed to sustain themselves and ensure their children’s education,” he said. The Mukhya Mantri Sukh Shiksha Yojana aims to bridge this gap by providing targeted support to those who need it most.
The initiative also seeks to address broader social issues such as child abuse, trafficking, teenage marriages, and drug abuse by strengthening child protection at the family level. By ensuring that children in vulnerable situations receive the care and support they need, the scheme aims to create a safer and more secure environment for all.
The Mukhya Mantri Sukh Shiksha Yojana also recognizes the unique challenges faced by children with disabled parents. Disability often correlates with unemployment and poverty, creating a cycle of hardship that is difficult to break. This scheme acknowledges the need for targeted interventions to support these families, ensuring that children with disabled parents are not left behind.
Eligibility for the scheme is determined based on the family’s income, with all eligible women, children, and individuals having a family income not exceeding ₹1 lakh per annum covered under the initiative. Applications can be submitted to the local Child Development Project Officer, making the process accessible to those who need it.
Chief Minister Sukhu emphasized that the current state government has made it a priority to give a voice to underprivileged sections of society. “It is important to foster a supportive environment for vulnerable families, ensuring that children receive the education and care they need to lead dignified lives,” he said. The government has launched numerous initiatives to support these communities, demonstrating its commitment to inclusivity and social justice.
He also highlighted the need for a sensitive approach to governance, noting that many individuals and families are unable to approach the government with their grievances. “There are sections of society who are unable to approach us with their grievances and hardships, but as a sensitive government, we are committed to the well-being of every individual,” stated the Chief Minister.
The announcement of the ₹53.21 crore allocation was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sukhu at the secretariat on Sunday, August 25. This initiative is a clear indication of the government’s dedication to improving the lives of the most vulnerable members of society, ensuring that no child is left behind in their pursuit of education and a better future.
