Swift Dzire 2024: Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., India’s largest passenger carmaker, has made a notable pivot by submitting its popular compact sedan, the Dzire, for the Global New Car Assessment Program (GNCAP) crash test. In a first for the company, the Dzire has earned a remarkable 5-star safety rating, positioning Maruti among competitors like Tata Motors and Hyundai, which have prioritized safety in recent years. This milestone not only improves Maruti’s market standing but also showcases a strategic shift towards safer design, especially for retail buyers.
Why the Shift? Addressing Demand for Safety and Global Standards
Historically, Maruti Suzuki hesitated to engage with GNCAP, focusing instead on India’s Bharat New Car Assessment Program (BNCAP). However, growing consumer awareness and preference for safer vehicles have nudged the company towards adopting more globally recognized safety standards. The 5-star GNCAP rating highlights Maruti’s intention to address this safety demand, particularly as vehicles with higher safety ratings perform better in international markets, which Maruti is keenly eyeing for expansion.
The redesigned Dzire is the first model from Maruti to attain this 5-star rating, and it underscores the company’s shift in focus from solely providing affordable options to creating vehicles that are safe, reliable, and globally competitive. Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki, emphasized that the new Dzire meets stringent crash test requirements, stating, “We aim to lead in safety as much as in affordability and reach.”
The new Dzire sedan has been engineered with modern safety features, including six airbags, anti-lock braking systems (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), and traction control. Maruti Suzuki has also included a premium electric sunroof, adding appeal for individual buyers. The company’s redesign aims to reignite interest among retail buyers, as Dzire’s popularity among fleet operators previously accounted for 30-35% of its sales. To cater to both markets, Maruti plans to continue selling the current model—Tour S—as a fleet-specific edition, while the new Dzire targets individual buyers.
Maruti Suzuki currently holds over 60% of the entry-level sedan segment, commanding significant influence in the market. Despite the SUV trend, the compact sedan segment remains reliable, and Maruti’s commitment to quality and safety in sedans like the Dzire reflects its enduring presence here.
